Creem Launch was HOT HOT HOT

I got a little nervous when the forecast called for rain...but the weather held out and the night was pure magic! Ryann fans were lining up outside before we opened the doors at R bar for the Creem launch Party.
We were blessed with Maurice Brown playing live trumpet and Brian Burnside on the decks. The dancers put the Creem collection to the test with some serious back breaking moves and grace. Everyone had such a great night, we couldn't get them to leave.
Look out for our next event

Fischerspooner put Halloween to Shame

I am guessing if you live in New York, your Halloween was as annoying as mine. I was all dressed up as Jane Fonda, with a sparkle in my eyes dreaming of all the amazing parties to shake my leg warmers at. Apparently me and 15,000 other party goers. I spent all the night texting friends scattered around the city all of us trying to get into parties with lines around the block. I called it quits when someone started to puke on my cute little jazz shoes.

Tonight however, the night of the morning after, Fischerspooner made me forget all my Halloween sorrows. The had a show at the Moma that was f*&%#$ brilliant! I found out about it just last week when I helped the fabulous and talented Elise Martinelli sew the sequined get ups for the finale. After getting a glimpse, I knew it would be fun, but they were truly amazing. So original and playful, a great mix of fashion and costume.

The music was their signature electro pop that makes your booty do a shake. There was lots chatting up the audience, costume elaborate costume changes, moving mirrors and walls on stage that constantly changed your vantage point. The crowd was a very cute mix of professional looking matured hipsters that sang along to all their favorites.

All in all a great night, thanks Fischerspooner for saving my weekend.

Another Reason to vote Bloomberg out of office

Everyone knows I like a good rally, so when Celeste Lilore from RESTORE clothing asked for supporters to come rally for "Save the Garment District" I said sure. I wasn't sure what we are rallying for, but I showed up on 39th street and 7th ave and soon found out.

New York City under the Bloomberg admin has been getting re-zoned. We have seen this as hotels popping up all over the city and high rises in neighborhoods that used to have a cap on building height. What that means in the garment district has been sudden death to domestic manufacturing. Buildings that are by law supposed to only rent to garment related businesses at a fixed rent are having a free for all, jacking up the rents and kicking the factories out!

In a time when jobs are few, losing manufacturing in New York means a loss of many jobs. Did you know the garment industry is the 2nd biggest employer in New York?
What this also means is local brands, like Ryann, lose their ability to produce locally and may lose the ability to have a business period!

Bill Thompson came out and spoke in behalf of the garment center and against the hotel developers. Do what you can on election day and make sure you vote to SAVE THE GARMENT DISTRICT!

Pretend You didn't go to Bed at 8pm last night

If you are anything like me you plan on going out most nights, and then some time between, 8:30-10:00 my disco nap turns into morning. But last night I made it out! It was so worth it, what a great night.

I went to Santos and saw the live house music band Tortured Soul with a special performance by the multi-talented Wunmi Girl.
It was a great night with great music. Tortured Soul played a beautiful set of melodic love songs dedicated to various girls one might meet out at a Tortured Soul concert.
Wunmi sang some wonderful songs about consumerism, following your heart and some other deep topics with her famous wide grin on her face.

Check out both of these amazing talents http://www.wunmi.com/

Battle Royale Gets a Little Crazy

Performance artist Shaun EL C Leonado likes to shock us with his physical feats. This time I think he may have shocked himself. Look at those crazy pictures! Ryann has worked with Shaun in the past to help him create the characters for this shows. We made a 12 foot long red velvet cape that was worn for a show and then displayed as part of a gallery show.
This time Shaun went up to Toronto Canada and gathered 20 Canadian pro wrestlers, gathered them in a cage, blind folded them and let them rip each other's heads off for hours. Ryann supplied the blind folds for the event, so I guess we are a proud sponsor.

NOW Tradeshow

Ryann participated in a eco-friendly tradeshow September 20-21 called NOW.

The NOW showcase features the newest in progressive, conscious-minded, independent, locally produced fashion design.
http://nowshowcase.org/

The venue was awesome, it was on the top floor of a building in the city giving us an amazing view of the empire state building that could be better seen on the outdoor patio! There was a great turn out, buyers, shoppers, and just curious on-lookers. There were orders being made and networking happening everywhere so I thin everyone was happy and that in turn made me very happy! The cocktail party was a great success with vegan finger foods from Regal Vegan and organic sangria and different wines.

I thank everyone who came out to support us, and everyone who helped (my wonderful interns Josefina and Sabrielle)!

Fashion Week: Ryann Style

Fashion Week just came and went and though I would have loved to attend all the amazing shows, I was busy working on Ryann's next collection. It was a hectic week, but I did get to enjoy one fashion show. Carolina Herrara was showing her Spring 2010and with my love Luis Cornier knowing Anne Grauso, Carolina Herrara's PR, I was able to put myself and my 3 interns and great friend Keith on the list.
On the way in we saw the great Rachel Zoe which was cool and once we got inside we saw many more important figures in fashion like Anna Wintour with her body guard lol. The show was wonderful, beautiful silhouettes, elegant dresses, although the colors were not my favorite I think the collection overall will be a success.

Ryann phootshoot

We shot for Ryann's Spring 2010 lookbook this past Wednesday. I wanted it to be an outdoor city-inspired scene; with rusted fences, yellow school buses and graffiti. So we chose different spots around Williamsburg.

The team consisted of photographer- Tono Radvany, stylist- Keith Pearson, hair/makeup artist- Regina Harris and my two lovely interns Sabrielle Lezeau and Josefina. And our model, 19 year-old, Elena Carola who is signed with Muse, did an amazing job especially considering how bad the sun was beating down on us!

We met at 10 am at Tono's art studio in Williamsburg which ,we learned, was apparently where the great Basquait once worked! We began shooting around 12 noon and wrapped it all up about 5pm. With everyone's contributed efforts the photoshoot went well.

Photographer: Tono Radvany (tonovision.com)
Stylist: Keith Pearson (anotherfashioninterpreter.blogspot.com)
Hair/Makeuup: Regina Harris (reginaharris.com)

Here's a few behind the scene's pictures but I can't show you too much!

How to Recycle in New York City

Recycling has become rather confusing and before you give up completely, or begin carrying all your recycling around to the closest wholefoods, we have some tips and did some investigative research to clarify the confusing myths.

All your recycling has to be placed in CLEAR PLASTIC BAGS ONLY. If you carry down your recycling in another colored bag make sure to empty the bag and recycle it separately.
You can recycle plain clean plastic bags, none with draw strings or any other material in your local whole foods, chain drug stores, and many chain grocery stores. For more information on this new addition to recycling check www.plasticbagrecycling.org

All plastic caps must be removed from bottles, they are not recyclable, metal caps are ok.

Pizza boxes are paper and can be recycled if they have a few spots of oil, heavily soiled pizza boxes cannot be recycled. The same goes for any paper and/or plastic. Make sure to rinse out cans and bottles before recycling them. Soiled containers will not be recycled.

All your yogurt, margarine, and take out plastics, which are #5 plastic cannot be placed in NYC recycling. These can be rinsed out and brought to a wholefoods where a company preserve makes razors and toothbrushes out of them.

If you place something in the recycling bin that is not able to be recycled (#5 container, plastic caps, platic bags, etc) it is at the discretion of the recycling collector if the whole bag will be thrown out. So an improper item can contaminate the whole bag and that's a real shame. Please educate yourself and recycle correctly.

Ryann Teams Up with Added-Value

Starting June 1st, 2009, for each piece of clothing and accessories purchased from Ryann, $1 will be donated to the amazing community garden in Red Hook Brooklyn called Added-Value.

Added-Value began in 2001 to address the need for fresh organic produce in a neighborhood with little access and no farmers markets. With limited healthy food choices this community has with a much higher obesity and asthma rates than average New Yorkers.

Added-Value employs the communities youth, teaches about farming, introduces new vegetables to the community, sponsors a farmers markets and teaches composting. Ryann is proud to sponsor this wonderful organization. We are hoping other neighborhoods are inspired to create similar projects throughout the city

Ryann is supporting Tony Avella for Mayor

Read below how New York City Mayoral candidate Tony Avella proposes to further green NYC

* Create an Energy Volatility Task Force: Upon taking office, Tony would seek to create the Energy Volatility Task Force that he is proposing at the City Council (Intro.#891/2008), which would change City policies and procedures to mitigate the effects of huge fluctuations in price and the availability of oil. The issue of energy volatility and the resulting impact on the City’s economy, as well as that of the nation, must be addressed immediately. Details on his proposal are available here.

* Saving Energy by Example: New York City can combat climate change by leading by example. The City already owns hundreds of buildings throughout the five boroughs, most of which are old and energy inefficient. In a time when both the environment and our economy are demanding our attention, we can no longer allow the taxpayers’ dollars to literally drain out the windows of City-owned properties.

As Mayor, Tony will start by requiring an energy audit of all City-owned buildings. Next, he will implement simple changes, such as requiring City-owned buildings to turn their lights and computers off at night. This is a basic energy-saving step that the Bloomberg administration, for all of its so-called green credentials, has failed to take. Tony would also work with his commissioners to develop a sensible capital plan for improving the energy efficiency in City-owned buildings. Done correctly, these expenditures could lead to real energy and money savings on a yearly basis, which will help to greatly reduce our carbon footprint.

* Green is Good for Business: Over the past eight years, the Mayor has actively worked to undermine viable businesses within our city by seeking to rezone manufacturing districts as “mixed use” or by simply seeking to promote “sustainable” housing developments where jobs already exist. The Mayor cannot on one hand seek to reduce air pollution and traffic and at the same time force local manufacturers to work outside of City and transport their goods in by truck.

As Mayor, Tony will make a concerted effort, through the Department of City Planning, to target areas of the City for use by local manufacturers. It will be his priority to target these areas for sustainable manufacturing, as New York City has an opportunity to be a leader in this sector in the coming years. These manufacturing jobs will be vastly superior to the big box store jobs that the Bloomberg Administration seems to believe in and, they will be green!

Finally, Tony has committed to directing his city agencies to buy greener, more energy-efficient products. In doing so, he would give increased weight to companies that make sustainable goods within the
five boroughs.

Sustainable Vacationing in Panama

If you are looking for a great eco-friendly spot to get off the grid, head straight to Bocas del Toro in Panama. On the island of Bastimento is the eco-friendly aqua lodge Eclypse del Mar. Each of the rooms are wooden huts built on stilts in the water with tropical fish and star fish right below the water's surface.
The electricity is solar powered and the water is filtered from a spring. Behind the main lodge is an amazing nature walk with sloth toe monkeys, exotic birds and their famous tiny red frogs.
